Matthew Martin tapped home a Jay Kostecke shot to beat the Midwest Blackbirds in overtime last night in a USPHL Midwest East showdown last night at Dyer Indiana. In what could only be explained as one of the strangest of games it was a contest that had more shares of ups and downs than a diabetic in a sugar factory for the Irish Hockey Club.
The Irish whom are on the team's first road trip of the 2020-2021 played the first period as if they were forced to push the bus from Southgate to Dyer Indiana as the team lacked communication, and effort which the Blackbirds took full advantage of goin up on the Irish 3-0 by the end of the first.
However in the 2nd period the Irish came out of the locker room as if Coach Sam Shaheen turned on the water hose and turned on a whole new level of offense scoring 6 times in the period. Cole Zalewski opened up the scoring just two minutes into the 2nd period scoring his first goal in an Irish Uniform on a pass from Clay Hightower. Over the next 9 minutes the Irish lit up the lamp 5 more times as 5 different players took credit for goals including Clay Hightower, Lane Stewart, Stefano Mini, Shane Romback and Matt Martin as the Irish outshot the Blackbirds 34-4.
However in the 3rd period the Irish continued the offensive pressure but once again appeared to lack communication as several defensive breakdowns allowed the Midwest Blackbirds to score 3 times to tie the score. The Irish took over 30 shots in the 3rd period ,however credit has to also go to the Blackbirds goaltenders whom turned away some big scoring opportunities for the Irish in the 3rd Period .
The game went into overtime 3 on 3 Detroit Fighting Irish goaltender Derek Antol Jr stood up to the test making some very big saves early in the overtime period when at 2:24 Jay Kostecke found an open Mike Martin streaking into the offensive zone and head manned the puck to Martin whom slid the puck into the Midwest goal for the game Winner.
This was sloppy , undisciplined however a win is a win stated Irish co-coach Sam Shaheen we are going to have some pretty in depth discussion with the primary subject about defensive zone coverage and responsibility.
