Irish Lose Friday Night Game in Overtime

The Detroit Fighting Irish and Chicago Cougars hit the ice tonight in a USPHL Premier league battle at the Southgate Civic Arena, Southgate Michigan. The game is the 2nd of the two game series.  Game On was played last night and was a contest that neither team was willing to concede. The two teams took to an overtime period to decide the winner as the Chicagoans took home a 3-2 overtime victory.

The first period began as if it was going to be a long night for the Detroit Club who was taking to the ice for the first time in several weeks. Chicago one of the most offensive explosive teams in the USPHL was determined to pour some of that offense on the Irish as they hammered 36 shots to Detroit.s 3 in the first period. It was also a period that saw Detroit take a few more trips to the penalty box than Co-coaches Sam Shaheen and Dennis Boomer cared for however the Detroit Fighting Irish penalty killers stood up to the test , combined with stellar goaltending by Dan McCarthy .

The 2nd period was a see saw battle Detroit opened the scoring with a goal by Captain Clay Hightower with helpers from Shane Romback and Cole Zalewski. Chicago tied the score at 10:19 of the 2nd period.  Clay Hightower broke the 1-1 deadlock on an unassisted goal at the 3;40 mark, However Chicago again tied  it up on a power play goal in the last minute of the period

The 3rd period was and exciting period as both teams traded power plays and had multiple opportunities to score but both team goaltenders and defensive units stood up to the test sending the game into overtime

The Cougars set up a great play as Kevin Johnson converted a Brimie an Manarino pass to knotch the winner for the Cougars.

"We set the bar tonight" stated Coach Dennis Boomer "our guys proved to themselves and showed us coached what they are capable of doing every night, we cant ask for much more than the effort we had from our boys tonight"  Coach Sam Shaheen was very quick to praise the efforts of Goaltender Dan McCarthy and of team captain Clay Hightower. "We are spoiled here in Detroit we have watched Clay for two seasons rise to the call and set the tone for his teammates not many players have that ability" and "Danny gave us a chance to win tonight he was aggressive and very cool under pressure.".

The two teams will face off tonight at 7:30 pm and the team will recognize the Downriver United Girls High School Team whom will be the special guest of the Irish for tonight's game/ You can get more information about the Downriver United Hockey team on the Detroit Fighting Irish website
