Team prepares for Preseason Training Camp

As this crazy year of 2020 continues to move on the Detroit Fighting Irish continue to move forward with cautious excitement as the team expects to open training camp at the team's home arena at the Southgate Civic Center Arena. It has been a summer of a constant changing schedule with nearly all of our scheduled events from Open Skates to Tryouts, from scouting trips to staff meetings al being impacted in one way or another by Covid-19 but thanks to the great people that make up the Irish staff every schedule change has been met with an alternative plan and the team has continued to operate its off season operations.

"The effort that our scouting staff has put forth has been astounding which has been headed by Sam Shaheen, Derek Antol and Jeremy Mcnulty whom made it a point to speak with every player that they correspond with which during a normal recruiting season is an enormous task to accomplish "/GM Dan Vasquez

In addition to scouting duties the team's coaching staff took advantage of the spring down time to review the team's off ice ,on ice and support programs. This included the team's ability to manage each players nutrition and personal work out programs. The results were implementation of an individual nutrition and training program managed thru 3rd party software that holds each player to a set of individually designed measurables, the program is managed by Shaheen whom has assumed the role of nutrition and strength coach for the Irish.

The coaches were able to redesign the teams weekly workout schedules that will allow each player time to work on dedicated days for individual skill development and specific days for team skill development with a team off ice regiment that will compliment the on ice schedule. Assistant Coaches Dennis Boomer and Jeremy McNulty have been paramount in Coach Dave Taylor's redesign and have both accepted more responsibility to insure that all of the goals in the program are met.

The same attention to detail has been spent in reviewing the team's measurables for monitoring each players academic development. "Our number one goal and mission is to prepare our players to move on to become Collegiate Athletes this requires our staff to understand NCAA an ACHA requirements for athletes as well as doing the research on admission requirements and procedures for each institution that our players may come into contact with. We also have a responsibility to each player to constantly review their academic goals and work to correct any deficiencies that can impact reaching those goals

"What is important here is that our players and our families can expect that each player is going to be individually pushed and will be held accountable for reaching the individual goals which are set on ice, and off ice". Stated Head Coach David Taylor during a recent player staff conference

"Our staff has done an impeccable job preparing for this season, however we have to really compliment the relationship that Southgate Recreation Director Julie Goddard and her staff have formed with our organization stated GM Dan Vasquez, "they have kept us informed on the status of City and State emergency policies and have worked with us to prepare our schedule and plans for a successful season. We knew when we moved our program to Southgate that we were doing more than moving into a building , we are building a long term relationship with a community, the City officials and the business community of Southgate.  What has taken place is far more than our expectations "  Our players will come into training camp and will look around and understand that they are representing more than just a logo on a jersey they are representing the City and the people and the community of Southgate.

On the player personnel front the team has a full roster of forwards , defence -men and goaltenders which is comprised of players predominantly from the Michigan area. The team returns a nucleus of veterans headed by the team's returning captain Clay Hightower, and includes forwards Lane Stewart, Jay Kostecke, Oliver Allen, and Drew Wooten.  Defence   Guiseppe Pizzo returns along with Carter Schuckbier and in Goal Derek Antol Jr returns to the crease for the Irish.

The Irish 2020-2021 Roster is loaded with players that bring experience and track records of success and leadership and will provide the Irish with a variety of players ages from 17-20 years old.  In contrast to the 2019-2020 Irish which was the youngest team in the USPHL This years team provide a well balance of veterans with prior Junior experience in addition to several Junior first timers

Rookie goal-tending coach Jacob Gorzelski will be joining the Irish staff and besides Antol will have several net minders under his guidance this season. " Im looking forward to training camp it will give me time to get to know the goal tenders and to set up individual workout regiments for each of them.  I am sure the boys will be ready to go to work

The Detroit Fighting Irish will open training camp on Tuesday Sept 8th at the Southgate Civic Arena due to  Covid-19 requirements the sessions will be closed to the public for more information on the Detroit Fighting Irish or the USPHL you can go to the teams website at
