The Detroit Fighting Irish wrapped up prospect camp yesterday afternoon giving the Irish coaching staff a pretty good sense of the direction of what the 2020-2021 Irish squad is going look like . With a full house on the ice and with 100% of returning veterans in attendance it appeared that some pretty big decisions were being made
Yesterdays workouts begin with a very vigorous off ice testing in the weight room where head coach Dave Taylor and Asst coach Jeremy McNulty handled the inspiration . The off ice scores were dominated by the recently signed Muskegon clan Chris Hawkins,Jager Kelly and Matt Martin whom also impressed on the ice and earned the nicknames "West Side Mafia: over the weekend.
On the Ice Goaltending coach Jacob Gorzelski with his assistant Koe Kebbe and team Player personnel director Sam Shaheen put the goalies though a rigorous on ice and evaluation session Caleb Swanson whom traveled from Phoenix Az for the camp stated he was impressed with the amount of time that was devoted to goaltenders over the two day camp
In the 2nd session of the Day Coach Dave Taylor and Shaheen conducted practice sessions that emphasized game situation and individual development drills. GM Dan Vasquez and assistant coaches McNulty, Boomer and team scout Derek Antol handled the evaluations as several players that were not in camp on Day 1 were on the ice
In the afternoon session assistant coach Dennis Boomer and Jeremy McNulty put the players through a lite workout and the group than met with coaching staff to discuss the team's nutrition and strength conditioning program. The final session of the weekend proved to be the most exciting as all of the participants were part of a progressive scrimmage that begin as a 3-3 than 4-4 than 5-5. The tempo was quick and the entire staff was equally impressed at the tempo and speed of the play
Young Guns Impressive
Several players of the Irish affiliate U-16 Midget team the Mount Clemens Wolves took part in the weekend camp and were very impressive. " It was obvious they came to compete and are definitely being tutored to play the game at the next level. "We are excited to be able have had those guys skate with us this weekend and look forward to seeing them throughout the season when they will practice with the Irish team. We look forward to them wearing the Irish sweater in the future".stated GM Dan Vasquez
Next on the Horizon
The Fighting Irish will begin to hold open skate training sessions at their Home Arena the Southgate Civic Arena on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Monday August 3rd. Alumni , High School and college bound players whom are looking to train and prepare for the upcoming season are invited to participate in the skates. Players can pre register on the team's website and can prepay and receive a discounted price.
Joint camp with NY Aviators August 15-16
The Detroit Fighting Irish and East affiliate the New York Aviators will hold a joint tryout camp at the Southgate Civic Center Arena on Saturday and Sunday August 15th and 16th. Opportunities will be available to players in both organizations at the USPHL Premier and Elite levels
Detroit Fighting Irish Training Camp August 22-23rd
The Fighting Irish final camp ot the 2020-2021 season will take place Saturday and Sunday August 22-23rd. Coach David Taylor's staff will be looking to fill its final positions over a combined 8 hours on ice and 4 hours off ice sessions. The Camp is open to all players birth dates 2000-2005
