Detroit Fighting Irish are excited to announce that our Captain Clay Hightower was picked up by the Rochester Monarchs for a weekend series vs the New Jersey Hitman. Clay just completed a great regular season that seen the first year rookie named team captain for his perseverance and leadership both on and off the ice. Hightower amassed 65 points in 44 games. Which was good for 1.48 pts per game, bringing him to be 19th overall in the premier division.
An impressive feat says Head Coach Taylor “When you look at the body of work, with a shorter bench this year, and the ups and downs for the team this season. To be able put up the points and results he has really shows his work ethic and not letting things get to him, or change his style of play. Clay has been a great captain showing this leadership each day. We are all excited to see what he can do in the couple of games he’s pulled up.”
Clay joined the Monarchs late last week after a win for the Irish against cross town rival Motor City. A win the team hopes to use the momentum from into the playoffs that start next weekend.
We talked to Clay after one of his skates and asked how things were going. “It is definitely much faster, less time to make decisions and the skill level is awesome.” Clay was also quick to point out that he will be coming back right after Sunday afternoons game. “I will be back for practice on Monday, as we need to get the (Irish) boys going. A week to get ready to take care of some business in playoffs!”
Coach Boomer mentioned that statements like that from Clay really show how unselfish he is as a player, and how he puts his team first.
The Irish family will be watching closely on HockeyTV as Clay takes the ice against the Hitmen on Saturday Feb, 23rd at 5pm and again on Sunday at 1pm.
Good luck Clay!
